God wants us to know Him, but how can we know that we know God? Some believe that because they know a lot about God that they know God. Some believe that because they feel good about God that they know God. Some believe that because they do a lot for God that they know God. So which is it, or what does it take to really, truly know God?
We must be careful not to let mere intellectualism, emotionalism, or activism keep us from actually loving God. What is the answer to this? The answer is for us to be engaged with God in all three areas. In other words, to know God with our whole heart, our mind, will, and emotions. That is what this prayer of Paul is addressing. Prayer is what ties it all together.
Christian growth is a process of acquiring a greater, richer, and deeper “taste” for the goodness of God. Because there are things we won’t be able to figure out. There are feelings we won’t be able to change. There are things we won’t be able to do anything about. But when we can truly put our hope fully in the Lord, then we can endure the problems and still enjoy the passion of the pursuit of God. That sort of life is possible, but only if it is saturated in prayer. That is what ties our mind, will, and emotions together. That’s what it takes to know God.
