We need to note that the NT (1Cor. 5:13) uses the theme from this chapter. In fact, it quotes from either this chapter or the numerous other passages in Deuteronomy where it teaches us to purge the evil from among us (17:7; 19:19; 21:21; 22:21, 24; 24:7). I. Religious Leaders (vv. 1-5) These five verses address the temptation posed by those who speak for God, by religious leaders. From vv. 1-2, we see that these prophets either through dreams or through signs or wonders have a vein of credibility. There is a demonic supernaturalism to this. We read that what they told "takes place" or "comes to pass" (v. 2). Let us observe… A. The deception/temptation can come from within the church. B. God allows it to test our love to Him (v. 3). C. Controversy can be a sign of our love to God (v. 5).
