Today I will continue our new sermon series, which will consist of an expository study through the book of Ecclesiastes. At this point we begin the second section of the book, which is where Solomon seeks to prove the assertion he made in the first section. This is very important, because for the next several chapters Solomon will argue his case from his own experience, proving it one point at a time. The author has experimented with every aspect of life; he has been on a diligent mission to discover meaning in life; he has been on a diligent quest to understand the significance of life. And he has come up absolutely empty! In this section he identifies exactly how he came to that conclusion. In this sermon I will develop what he says about his pursuit of wisdom, which was his starting point. Even the pursuit of wisdom “under the sun” did not satisfy the deepest longings of his heart. Following the exposition I will make some detailed application. Once again it is my prayer is that the Lord will be pleased to bless the preaching of His word as we continue this important study.
