Chapter 29 picks up from 28:2 with the Philistines marshalling their armies together. David and his men have taken refuge with one particular Philistine leader, Achish, to keep out of reach of Saul's pursuit of him. The other commanders are not willing to trust David's loyalty when they go to battle against Israel being led by Saul.
While David as been gone the Amalekites have overthrown the city where he had headquartered and their families were living. Their women and children were taken captive. This embittered his own men against him. David turns to the Lord during this time of great distress and finds strength and encouragement to take the necessary action to rescue the families.
The book concludes in the final chapter with the account of the death of Saul and his three sons during the battle with the Philistines as the reign of Israel's first king comes to an end.
Through the course of his trials, David's faith and character have been refined and matured with perfect timing so that he is ready to assume leadership of the nation as the man God has chosen to be king.
