Paul returns to the topic of foods offered to idols and again cites their slogans which in this case are true but are being misused. The first slogan is that idols have no real existence. In one sense this is true and we cite many OT passages to that effect. In another sense the pagans worship demons but Paul does not bring that fact up until 1 Corinthians 10:20. The statement about "one God" is from the Shema of Deuteronomy 6:4. There indeed is only one true God, the triune God of the Bible. This sermon explains monotheism as the existence of the eternal, non-contingent Creator. The "so-called" gods Paul mentions in verse 5 do not have the essential attributes of the true God. Some Corinthian Christians were using this truth to take unwarranted liberties with the worship services and meals of the pagans. We spend time in this sermon laying out the truth of God's eternal existence and the deity of Christ. We look at the "all things" statements in verse 6 and conclude that they are to be taken as literal and comprehensive. The doctrine of God must be taught to the church since many people have neo-pagan beliefs and practices in our contemporary situation. We cite passages in Isaiah about King Cyrus the Persian whose life and future activities were predicted by Isaiah 200 years before Cyrus was born. God alone is sovereign over history and His purposes stand. We end with a call from the book of Isaiah for all people to turn to God as well as the same call from the book of Acts. The true God cares about us and calls for us to know and serve Him.
