Some thoughts. The central theme of this sermon is the danger for the child of God to listen to advises from worldly people, coming from carnal motives. But I do not think that Exodus 18 tells that Jethro spake from carnal wisdom, contrary to God's will, and that Moses was wrong in following his advise. The text does not tell us Jethro was wrong. More, Jethro says to Moses in verse 23 to follow his advise only if God tell him to do so. Concerning Jethro, is seems that he went to Canaan with all his family (Num. 10:31-32; Judges 1:16 and 4:11). At least, his sons were among the people of God. I would interpret differently Numbers 11 as well, not as Moses again erring because of Jethro's bad advise. I think God used Jethro's advise to teach Moses and the calling of judges was the will of God for the better judging of His people.
