Through the book of Deuteronomy God is seeking to make His people passionately obedient. It would be right to assign this theme to Deuteronomy: "possession through obedience." This sermon is about (1) the motives of obedience. There is love and gratitude, there is an appropriate fear of consequences. These are not mutually exclusive. (2) the aspects, or catagories, of obedience. These include, individual obedience, family obedience, community obedience, and national obedience. They all matter. (3) the power of obedience--that divinely appointed ability and desire for obedience. Nothing but the supernatural inworking of God can make fallen human beings appropriately obedient: "For it is God that works in you , both the wanting to, and the doing of His good pleasure". With every command we may expect an inward ability to rightly keep the commands. The greatest privilege in life is to obey God. "I would rather obey God than work miracles," said Martin Luther. Indeed.
