Theme: Though people may reject the gospel of Jesus, His followers must show continued grace as we proclaim His truth. In v. 51, we see the resolution of Jesus. He "set His face" toward Jerusalem and was determined to fulfill the mission of His Father. We should have the same attitude, though we may suffer, we know God is faithful. His plans will be fulfilled. In vv. 52-53, we see the rejection of Jesus. The Samaritans didn't receive Jesus because His face was set toward Jerusalem. We can learn through this that when we face rejection because of the kingdom, we need to trust God's sovereignty. We can learn from the incorrect response of the disciples that we need to know our place. We are called to be faithful and proclaim the gospel and leave the results to God. In the rebuke of Jesus in vv. 55-56, we learn that now is not the time for judgment but for grace. We need to practice love and patience as we reach out to the lost with the good news. Have you been rejected for following Christ? Have you shared the gospel and been rejected? Christ knows how you feel. He was despised and rejected. We as Christ followers should seek to live a life of sharing, love, patience, and mercy. Look for opportunities and trust God to do the work. Know who you are, a simple servant who is called to trust and obey!
