This morning we are going to go back into the days of restoration in the Bible. Due to sin and rebellion, the nation of Israel had been displaced from the Promise Land. The city of Jerusalem had been destroyed. The Temple, place of worship, was ransacked by the Babylonians and the glory of God had departed. The walls had been burned with fire, but God would revive His people again. Under the leadership of Ezra and others, the Temple was rebuilt. God had stirred up the hearts of the people through the preaching of Haggai and Zechariah to rebuild the Temple, but the walls of Jerusalem had not been rebuilt. Nehemiah had gotten word that the people in Jerusalem was in great affliction and reproach (Neh. 1:3). Would anyone be moved to prayer on behalf of these people or would anyone care? God moved in Nehemiah’s heart and he rallied the people for the work that was set before them. This morning the title of this message is going to be “The Sword and the Trowel.” A sword is an offensive weapon worn at the side and used by hand either for thrusting or cutting. A trowel is a mason’s tool used in spreading and dressing mortar and breaking bricks to shape them. They represent something about the saints of God. We will consider 1) The Work is Great and Will Take Everyone 2) The Enemy is Real 3) The Victory is Secured
