Aim: To be willing, unlikely heroes—as Christ's church today.
Doctrine: Often, the Lord chooses the least-likely people to serve His wonderful ends. Gideon was not an obvious candidate for greatness, and yet, God had invested him with real (though latent) strength.
Exegesis: How the Lord makes and uses unlikely heroes: He sovereignly calls us (vv. 11-12); He miraculously empowers us (vv. 13-14); He covenantally bonds to us (vv. 15-16).
Further application: Why Gideon's calling is so encouraging for us in the church today: because his initial status was so much like our own, and yet, like him, our end in Christ is sanctified and glorious.
Key verse: v. 12 ''And the Angel of the LORD appeared to [Gideon], and said to him, 'The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!'''
