It seems like we always get it wrong. We are always inclined to place hope in those who seem wise, those who are mighty, and those who seem noble. The Bible clearly tells us here that God seldom chooses from among those, but rather chooses from among what the world considers foolish, weak, base, and despised, and sometimes God just uses things which are not to bring to nought (nothing) things that are. We need to be careful lest we find ourselves being an obstacle to the working of God. We are poor judges of others because we only see the outside, and we only see present circumstances.
