On July 4th, 1776 the signers of the Declaration of Independence put their signature on a document declaring their freedom from British rule. They declared that 'all men are created equal', but not all were treated equally for slavery was common in the early colonies. It took another war, the Civil War, and a courageous President, Abraham Lincoln, to stand up for the cause of freedom. And on New Year's Day, 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing slaves in both the north and south. But it was not until after his death that Congress enacted the 13th Amendment banning slavery. But slavery still exists--even here in America. Not everyone is free! Many are enslaved spiritually--and they don't even know it! They think they are free to live anyway that they want, according to their own thinking. But in reality they are slaves to sin, and what they need is a savior. Jesus Christ is the GREAT EMANCIPATOR!! In John 8, Jesus first lays out the PATHWAY to Freedom. It begins with belief in Christ coupled with continuing in His Word, knowing the truth will set us free. Secondly, Jesus blows the cover off the PRETENDERS--those who thought they were free, but are not for they are enslaved to sin. Jesus closes with the PROMISE of FREEDOM. As sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ, we abide forever in God's household! And if Jesus makes you free, you will indeed be free! He offers to us FREEDOM PLUS! Not just freedom from our sin, but freedom to enjoy everything He gives to us! The question for you to consider: Are you on the pathway to freedom today?
