The Lord Jesus Christ called him "the greatest man born among women". He was the last Old Testament prophet who came and ministered in the spirit and power of Elijah. He was the older cousin and forerunner of the Messiah. To him was given the privilege of baptizing the Christ and he was an eyewitness as God the Holy Spirit descended as a dove upon Him and God the Father audibly spoke and said "This is My Beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased." His name was John the Baptist and he was mighty in the grace of the Lord. Yet, when his faithfulness to boldly preach the Word of the Lord landed him in prison and set before him the all too real prospect of martyrdom, he sent two of his disciples to ask the Lord Jesus an important question: "Are You the Coming One, or should we expect someone else?" John's faith began to stumble, he questioned whether or not Jesus was truly the Christ. Yet how did Christ respond to John's question? Was He angry or outraged? No, He answered with great compassion and gentleness. This message examines John's stumbling and the remedy to it, for we are made up of the same stuff as he. In these texts we find great hope for the stumbling believer in Christ, for we have a compassionate Savior who takes great pity upon us. He remembers our frame, He knows we are but dust.
