True greatness is not measured by one's ability to control people but rather by one's ability to serve people. Raw power does not qualify one to rule well whether in the state, the church, or the family. The most qualified leaders are those who have learned that the serious responsibility to lead is not an excuse to control people, to look important in the eyes of others, or to promote their own agenda. Those wrong reasons for ruling are all too common in those who have been corrupted by a hunger and thirst for power. However, to find leaders in the church, who understand that the greatest duty of a church officer is to be a servant to Christ and of His people is truly extraordinary. Rather than filling us with pride, the duty of caring for Christ's flock ought to empty us of pride and to fill us with the humility and wisdom of Jesus.
The Lord Jesus teaches us from our text that the greatest leader is the greatest servant. The main points are: (1) The Willingness of Christ to Serve through Suffering (Matthew 20:17-19); (2) The Desire of the Disciples to Be Served through Ruling (Matthew 20:20-24); (3) True Greatness Lies Not in Ruling but in Serving (Matthew 20:25-28).
