In this sermon we discuss the history and origin of those who hold to decisional regeneration. Was Charles Finney a great preacher or did he introduce a poison that has brought much harm to professing Christianity? Who followed in his footsteps and what has been the sad outcome of this type of theological position? As i told you last week, during the first and only Great Awakening, Jonathan Edwards believed in fervent prayer and supplication before the sovereign God, Who alone controlled the hearts of men and Edwards knew that God alone could save sinners if He so chose. He held to the idea that revival is “prayed down.”
But the reformed/ Edwardian idea of waiting upon the Lord to revive dead men who could not respond unless they were truly regenerated and Born again, that Idea was replaced by Finney’s conviction that revival is “worked up” ( in emotionalism along the lines of mass evangelism. The former views God as the agent in salvation and the latter sees man as the instrument of his own spiritual birth.
