The writer of Hebrews is certain that the churches that read his letter are attended by two types of people. People who are resting, and people who are not. Instead of resting, they are sitting - sitting on the fence and refusing to come to Christ. They keep hanging around the church but they are worried about the cost of following Jesus. After all, following Jesus might cost you your possessions, perhaps even your life. So instead of coming to Jesus many were thinking about returning to Moses, of sliding back into the safety of their traditional Judaism. But in the place of all our anxiety, God offers rest. You just need to trust Christ to enter God's rest. Our writer argues that now is the time to enter His rest: i.) the necessity of faith (v.1-2); ii.) the urgency of now (vv.3-7); the exclusivity of Christ (vv.8-11).
