It used to be that one could define a Christian as a God-fearing man or woman. That meant a Christian took God seriously. A Christian took the Law of God seriously, and took the Gospel of Jesus Christ seriously. A Christian took the warnings of God seriously, and took the promises of God seriously. A God-fearing man, woman, or child stood in awe of the infinite greatness, power, wisdom, holiness, and love of God.
Dear ones, the holy fear of God (when rightly understood) does not drive the Christian into torment, waiting for the mighty hand of God to smash one at any moment. Taking God seriously gives you meaning in life, for you realize that God is in charge, and He controls all that occurs in your life and in this world. Taking God seriously gives you hope and dispels the fear of man, the fear of circumstances, and the fear of death; for God is on the throne. May God multiply the generation of God-fearing people.
From our text this Lord’s Day we meet a servant of the Lord by the name of Obadiah, who feared the Lord greatly. He is somewhat of an anomaly in that he feared the Lord greatly though he yet served in the idolatrous administration of King Ahab. Let us consider the fear of God manifested in the life of Elijah and in the life of Obadiah. The main points from our text today are the following: (1) The Fear of God Revealed in Elijah’s Boldness (1 Kings 18:1-2,8,15); (2) The Fear of God Revealed in Obadiah’s Obedience (1 Kings 18:3-16).
