Using John 13:8 as our window we consider what is the Christian's part in Christ. We conclude that it is something that has already happened to them and yet it is something that of necessity finds its expression in the present. This understanding sharpens our focus on how to live the Christian life. That life rises in the present out of what is already true for us (past). Therefore in order to step into a life of Christian action and Christian rest we must know not just where we are going to but even more importantly, where we as Christian are coming from. This helps us understand why Paul in Romans 6 puts most of his emphasis upon what has happened to the Christian. Paul is intensely interested in the practicality, the functionality of your faith and he knows that this expressive life rises from what we already are, what has happened to us. Nail that down in your hearts and you will find the path way to the life God is calling you to live today.
