The church gathers on the first day of every week, the Lord’s day, to commemorate what we have placed special emphasis on today—the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Do you know of anyone besides Jesus Christ who has risen from the grave never to die again? I haven’t. On the contrary, I have been devastated by death—the dark horror and deep grief of being separated from many departed loved ones. Since Jesus has risen from the dead, we have gathered on the first day of the week like the church has throughout the centuries to worship Him “who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10). Finally, this makes sense because Jesus Christ is our hope. Paul wrote to Titus saying, “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” If all you are living for is this life, then your focus is way off. We are going to live forever somewhere—Heaven or Hell. Today, I want to explain three things. 1) The Devastation of Death is Unversal 2) Define Resurrection of Life 3) Direction to the hope found in Christ.
