The Prophet Malachi ministered during a difficult time in the history of God's people and that difficulty is shown in the conversations between God and His people in the book of Malachi. Those to whom he ministered were living in the Land of Promise, but it was a land that had been ravaged by the enemy. The destroyed temple had been rebuilt, but it was less glorious than Solomon's. Those who lived there now had come through exile in Babylon and, though they had experienced the wondrous return, their hearts were growing cold, they were withholding their financial support, They were marrying outside of the covenant people, their leaders were failing in their duties, and the life they were living was not what they expected when they relocated to the land of their fathers. It is easy to become distracted in duty and distant in devotion. But the Lord has said, "I have loved you."
