In 1988, John MacArthur published a book entitled, “The Gospel According to Jesus” with the subtitle, “What does Jesus mean when he says ‘Follow Me'?” The book spawned what came to be known as the “Lordship Controversy.” John MacArthur wrote this against other fellow dispensationalists. Basically, he was arguing from Scripture that you cannot say you are a Christian and live a wicked carnal life; Christ is both Lord and Savior. There is no such thing as “carnal Christians” as a separate class of believers. In a much less sophisticated form, we find something similar within evangelicalism which is often motivated by wishful thinking, some form of misinformed charity, or at times an unwillingness to draw the conclusions that ought to be drawn. Many evangelicals accept everyone's claim to be a Christian as being sufficient enough irrespective of their behavior, practice, etc. They do not go to church, misbehave in life, & at times live scandalously & are charitably believed to be Christians. The Gospel according to Jesus, Paul & the Psalms is the same. When God saves, He saves by His grace & that grace is effectual & not inactive. He changes those whom He saves by His grace. In Titus 2:11-14, we have one of the clearest teaching on the grace of God AND the godliness God produces in those whom he saves.
