John shows us the contrast between Law and Grace. The Law reveals God’s perfect holiness and produces legal condemnation toward unregenerate man. Bondage to sin was imputed to all people at the Fall, resulting in moral depravity and spiritual inability to be justified by meeting the Law’s conditions. The purpose of the Law was not to eliminate corruption or improve man’s morality or acceptance with God. But it foreshadowed Christ’s work and was given to show us that we need a savior. In contrast to Law, Grace and Truth met in Christ. They were essential to His character and work. His work produced justification and liberty for the elect. Christ fulfilled the Law perfectly, keeping all of its requirements in life and enduring all of its penalties in death. This perfect fulfillment of the Law produced imputed righteousness for His chosen people.
