The Publican in Jesus' parable called himself a sinner. He knew the only way to remit his sin was by God's propitiation. He asked not for mercy, though that is a precious word. He asked for God to be propitious. That is the blood sacrifice by which sin is expiated or forgiven. The sprinkled blood on the Mercy Seat under the first covenant was a type. Jesus and His blood was the fulfillment. His propitiation was effectual, but it's right for us to appeal to it.
