After God granted to Moses his petition to know what God was going to do and God agreed that His Presence would go with the Israelites, Moses then made another request, to see the glory of God. God agreed to that as well that He would have all of His goodness pass before him. He also said He would declare the name of the Lord, but this was not the name that He declared before at the burning bush, "I am." Here He says His name is "I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." Being the self-existent one means that He is not dependent or obligated to anyone. He and He alone determines to whom He will show mercy one. Paul quoted this passage in Romans 9 to make the argument that it is to God's glory that He is the one who particularly determines who will be saved. When we declare the name of the Lord in evangelism, we need to be careful not to hide His glory. God then continued and said, but no one can see me and live, so He would hide Moses in the cleft of the rock and cover him with His hand, so that all he could see was God's back. We must understand the holiness of God and, even as those who are saved, that the remaining sin in us is enough that if we saw Christ unveiled, we would die. It is easy to minimize the holiness and righteousness of God, but if we saw it, the corruption that remains in us would kill us. Praise God that He makes corruption take on incorruption, so that we can dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
