This sobering passage shows that it's possible for people to preach the truth about Jesus and the Biblical plan of redemption and yet be motivated by selfish ambition. Self-serving is a dangerous and subtle deceiver and its fruits are envy and strife. Paul cared only about the advancing of Christ's Kingdom and since he didn't focus upon his own difficulties, he could rejoice even when people were proclaiming God's truth with the intent of harming him. This was because he knew that the power of the truth is through the working of the Holy Spirit and is not dependent upon the sincerity of the human agents who proclaim it. When the truth goes forth, it will work powerfully in advancing God's Kingdom, which is the basis for real rejoicing.
