Intro Why do we have recorded in Matthew, Mark & Luke this glorious transformation & revelation of Jesus on the mountain? At one level it's obvious. It's a revelation of His power & glory. But also of His human weakness & misery (note parallels w/Gethsemane).
1.The Father strengthens his Son to bear his great burden. He's given: a.Reminder & foretaste of heavenly glory b.Company & testimony of Moses & Elijah c.His Father's voice from the cloud
When Jesus began to explain what would happen to him, his friends' reaction was unbelief & hostility. No understanding. No sympathy whatsoever. But his father in heaven knew what he was facing & how to strengthen him for what was to come. If you're a child of God, that love & compassion is very real & great towards you also. He cares for you.
2.Why does he strengthen us for the burden rather than remove it? Why couldn't they stay on the mountain forever? The Father still had work for Jesus, the disciples, & likewise for us to do. The mountain is to strengthen us for work & tribulation that lies ahead.
Conclusion Why does the Lord keep us here in the midst of our suffering? Paul writes, 'Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain & continue with you all for your progress & joy of faith, that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ' (Phil 1:24-26). Peter is right. 'Lord, it is good for us to be here.' But not to stay.
