We spend a great deal of our lives trying to get security for ourselves and for those we love. Is your home security adequate? Do you have enough insurance? Have you accumulated sufficient savings? Are you in possession of satisfactory health? Do you know enough people who can help you? It is an insecure world, and life is insecure. One thing we expect from government leaders is that they will provide us with security. Yet, the only sovereign we can fully trust for our security is God. It has been aptly said that "irreligious people reject God by not wanting Him to be a part of their lives at all; religious people reject God by letting Him be a part of their lives but not really trusting Him completely or depending on Him alone." They want God as their safety net but are still primarily trusting in their own strength. A rejection of complete trust in God is a rejection of God Himself. It would be so much easier to trust God if we could control Him. But we cannot, so we have some stipulations. God calls that a rejection of Him because it is a rejection of full trust in Him. The author of Hebrews says that without faith it is impossible to please God because those with faith must believe that He rewards those who seek Him (Heb 11:6). When you do not trust someone, you feel like you must control them. That is where Israel is. They want a king they can see and touch and control because they do not fully trust God. And God rightly calls this rejection because everything about His character proves that they can trust Him. Human kings give some, but they sure take! Sinful solutions are always more costly than you expect.
