Aim: To personify Christian grace in its proper order: for Christ first, and then the world.
Doctrine: Christian grace contends for the church's and the gospel's honor first—even as it also grants forgiveness to others. God would not have His saints ''roll-over'' (at the expense of Christ's glory), but would have us expose everything to the light of Christ's truth.
Exegesis: How Christian grace operates in the lives of true believers: the integrity and reputation of the gospel and the church are to be defended (vv. 35-37); the truth is to be established, and then cooperation may be agreed to (vv. 38-39); the church gets more emboldened for her further worship and evangelism (v. 40).
Further application: How members of today's church may incarnate Christian grace: by putting Christ, His gospel, and His church first, and then by being exemplary citizens in every way we can.
Key verse: v. 37 ''But Paul said to them, 'They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison; and do they now throw us out secretly? No! Let them come themselves and take us out.'''
