Christ sacrificed Himself for the sins of His people. His body and blood were offered in death at Calvary in our place, paying all the demands of divine justice for us. Thus our very everlasting life is dependent upon His body and blood. Spiritually we draw life from them, and this feeding upon Christ for life is symbolized by the bread and wine of the Lord's Supper.
Christ is our High Priest after to order of Melchisedec, a different order than the Aaronic priesthood. Aaron never brought eternal salvation to his people like Christ did to us!
Aaron never went into the true Holy of Holies, into Heaven itself, before the throne of God like Christ did for us!
Aaron never reigned in Righteousness and Peace like Christ, the priest after the order of Melchisedec, did for us!
Aaron died, but Christ lives forever, forever to save us!
Aaron was a priest of an inferior covenant of works, but Christ is High Priest of the New Covenant, in which God promises not to remember our sins against us ever again!
Most importantly, sinners brought their lambs to Aaron for sacrifice, but Christ brought a better offering for sin, when He offered Himself at the Cross!
He offers to us the symbols of bread and wine, tokens of His offering that He brought Himself that saves us forever! Rich food indeed does our Savior provide for us!
Most astounding is this: the second mentions of bread and wine in the Scriptures are that bread and wine that Melchisedec Himself brought to Abraham and fed him with!
Thus, our Lord Jesus fulfills the type of Melchisedec, for He too offers bread and wine to God's people, and by that rich food, communicates Righteousness and Peace with God!
