The Lord Jesus taught that He is the bread of life - that all those who trust in Him receive Eternal Life by His power.
His teaching on this matter was occasioned by the multitudes lusting after the free food that Christ had just provided them the night before at the feeding of the 5000. Jesus warned them that they ought to seek the bread of life, instead of laboring to get more free food from the Savior.
Ever since the fall of man, bread has not come cheap. It must be gained by hard labor and by sweat. Because of sin, this is the way the world works now.
All of politics is an effort to somehow get some free things by taking them from other people who have them.
But Jesus said that the Bread of Life is free for the taking. All a sinner has to do to receive this bread is believe on Christ and His promise of everlasting life!
But the crowd keeps trying to bring Christ back to what they really want: free food for this life. They bring up the manna that God rained down from heaven to feed the Israelites, and suggest that Jesus should do the same to convince them of His legitimacy. They were so mired down in carnal things, that they refused to see the inestimable value of the bread of life being offered to them!
Jesus keeps bringing them back to the fact that the Father has provided free bread of life and everlasting life in the Savior.
Finally frustrated, the crowd murmurs against the Savior - they murmur against His offering of eternal life by Himself!
In this they were following the rejection by Israel of the manna. It wasn't good enough, so they too complained against the free provision of God!
Praise God, the bread of life is still free for us!
