The Corinthians were experiencing an authority crisis, because their wrong perception of what true authority should look like and how it should manifest itself caused them to reject God's clear revelation that was coming through Paul. When our misperceptions blind us to the only source of true authority (God's revealed will, revealed through the channels He has ordained), then we will be tossed about by man's constantly changing 'wisdom.' To despise the true source of authority (for whatever reason) is to put yourself upon a path to self-destruction. Paul was very anxious about his Corinthian children in the faith and thus addresses their misperceptions in a fatherly way.
