Have you ever lost your wonder? Have you ever been going through the motions from one thing to the next? Often, we continue to go and go and go with little rest. The excitement of life, the refreshment of the newness of each day, and the adventure of the journey the Lord has you on can sometimes seem dull. We sometime live in the gray. Everything seems vanilla. Life is mundane. We overlook the miraculous. This week, I came across a verse that describes how desensitized that we can become. We are prone to lose our wonder of God and develop callouses on our hearts. Do you ever develop callouses on your hands? When the skin is exposed to friction, the skin protects itself by developing a callous in order to handle the pressure or wear and tear the hands or feet are having to endure. For example, this spring when I began to till the ground, my hands had not been used to handling the vibration of the tiller. The constant friction developed blisters and callouses on my hand. If you work out with dumbbells, you know what it is like to have the metal rubbing your hands and protecting the other sensitive parts of your hand. Callouses develop over time through much friction. This morning, I want us to visit a passage of Scripture where the word describes the disciples as being hard-hearted. The disciples had allowed the ministry to wear them down and cause them to lose their wonder. The works of God had become familiar, and they had lost their amazement. If this is possible for the disciples, I know we are just as prone to become insensitive to God and unsympathetic toward the needs of others. Our love and amazement of God can wane. Let’s read from Mark 6:30-52.
