When the apostles were fishing for men, they preached the gospel to them. And then when they drew the net to shore, to dry land, they then worked on separating out the fish that they would keep, from the fish that they would not keep. They would keep the fish that were edible, and they would throw away the bad. That is, they would evaluate the professions of men to confirm that they were true Christians. They would keep, they would bring into the church, those whose profession appeared to them to be genuine. And they would keep out the bad, those whose professions of faith did not appear to be credible. And they would throw away those who after they had been added the church, proved that they were not true by their sinful actions and not repenting of their sins. They were not always infallible in these evaluations, but they were always given wise discernment by the Lord Himself over time.
