God reveals Himself to His people, then gives to us the responsibility to worship Him rightly. Any "imaging" of God made by human hands falls far short of representing God as He truly is. "For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God… " Exodus 20:5 (NKJV) The second commandment, however, is not merely a warning against making graven images. When our thoughts of God are incongruent with how He has revealed Himself in His Word, we act idolatrously. We are idolaters at heart! What joy that our jealous God is infinitely merciful, eager to receive those who turn to Him as He reveals Himself in His Son, Jesus.
