'Circumcise your Hearts' certainly sounds like an odd command doesn't it? But nevertheless that was God's commandment to his people, and it reminds us that in both the Old Testament and the New, God never wanted people who merely went through the external rites and ceremonies that he appointed, but rather people who worshiped Him from the heart.
In short, true Christianity has always been a heart religion.
Therefore if one had the sign of circumcision in the Old Testament or Baptism in the New, WITHOUT the inward reality of regeneration and a new heart, then those signs would be empty and never enough to save.
