John 15, the vine discourse, contains three parts. Verses 1-8 is the metaphor. Jesus is the true vine, and His followers are the branches that bear fruit as they remain in the vine. Verses 9-16 explain the metaphor and what it means for the branches to abide in the vine. The third part, verses 17-chapter 16, verse 4, warn Christ's followers that their association with Him will bring upon them the hatred of the world. Jesus clearly taught that Christians will be persecuted. Why, then, do so many professed followers of Jesus want to be comfortable in the world? John warned, "Love not the world" (1 John 2:15). Paul warned, "Do not be conformed to the world (Romans 12:2).
