God had used a lengthy famine to bring the peoples of the world to the end of their resources. They had to give up money, possessions, property, and finally their own freedom to purchase food to live.
In this section, Joseph continues to fuction as a type of Christ, bringing salvation to the peoples of the earth.
This section also teaches some very vital Gospel lessons about where we seek our satisfaction and fulfillment. We are reminded that life does not consist in the abundance of things, nor the exercise of personal freedoms. Real life is found only in self-denial and following Christ in faith.
Finally, this section serves as a lesson in grace-giving. Joseph allowed people to use his seed, on his land, with his cattle, to sow food for themselves. They were just stewards, yet Joseph let them keep 80% for themselves. Christians also are stewards of the life God has given us. So it should be our natural response to grace that we first seek to give Christ our lives, and second that we use his gifts to support Gospel ministry and his body, the Church.
