The Old Testament commanded the Jews to circumcise their sons and it also commanded them "You shall not commit adultery." How do we know that circumcision is no longer required and the seventh commandment is still binding? Historically, the church has understood three kinds of OT Law: moral law, ceremonial law and civil/judicial law. The moral law, summarized in the ten commandments is perpetual and transcends culture, geography and epochs. The ceremonial law concerns everything that was preparatory in nature and was fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Christ. The purpose of these laws was to prepare Israel for Christ. Now that Christ has come, these laws no longer serve any purpose. The civil law concerns laws that pertained to Israel's civil code. Though they expired with the nation of Israel in 70 AD, they are instructive in various ways. They show us God's hatred for sin (and that doesn't change). They show us what sin deserves. They show us the difference between good and evil. They teach us principles of equity and justice.
