In 1 Peter 1:15-16, believers are instructed to be holy in all manner of life, because our God is holy. The challenge begins with an understanding of what holiness is as defined by God's character. Inherent within the word holiness is the idea of separation from sin, but it includes much more than that. The holiness of God is defined in that every part of His character is fully mature and perfect. He can get no better in any way than He already is. It is this perfection of His nature that makes Him transcendently higher than any person or part of His creation. It is that perfection of character in God that we are to strive for, not in trying to make ourselves better, but in surrendering to the work of the Holy Spirit as He remakes us from the inside out in the image of Jesus Christ. The result will be that the superior nature of God's holiness will be reflected both in our inward spirit and our outward actions.
