The apostle Paul was concerned for the church at Philippi that they would learn to preach and to share Christ in a way which would be glorifying to God, and which would show their love for the brethren. He wanted them to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel. Well, how could this come about? How could it come about that they would not be ashamed of the Lord, or of themselves in the way that they communicated the truth of the gospel? Only by coming to that place where they could sincerely say – For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. In order that we might understand this saying better, I would like us to think about 3 phrases which Paul uses here in these verses which will show us what it means to live to Christ. 1st of all – It means that you will have an earnest expectation and hope, that in nothing, will you be ashamed. 2nd – It means that you will magnify Christ in your body, whether by life or by death, so that He might be glorified. And 3rd – To live to Christ will mean that you will see dying as gain Let's see if we can learn to understand these things better over the next few minutes.
