David is a well-known type of the Lord Jesus, but as with all types, he fails to live up to the glory and power of the Savior.
It is profitable to examine David's life to see those points wherein he falls short. Examples abound in the incident of David's crossing over the brook Kidron to flee from Absalom, his son who rebelled against him.
David sought to recover his son Absalom. He begged his army to deal gently with him.
But Joab had a history of betraying the interests of David. He killed two other innocent men whom David sought to bring into his kingdom, Abner and Amasa. When he found Absalom caught in the branches of the tree, he struck him dead.
David wept for Absalom, but there was no saving his beloved son.
Praise God, our Lord Jesus' determination to save His people cannot be frustrated by the Joabs that surround Him - the devil, wicked men, cruel Romans, lazy Saints, wayward preachers - for though our Lord uses all sorts to do His will, He depends upon none of us. His eternal counsels will be thwarted by no man.
David wept that he would have given his life to save Absalom. His cry was prophetic: our Lord Jesus succeeds in saving all His people precisely because He did what David would have done: He died in our place, and we are delivered!
David crossed Kidron to flee the wrath of a rebellious people, but Christ crossed Kidron the night He was betrayed to deliver Himself up to judgment at the hand of an offended God to save His people.
Our Prince and our Savior - how much better the Lord Jesus is than David! Praise God, He'll never lose a single one of us! He'll raise us up to eternal life at the latter day!
