We fail to grasp the wonder and majesty of some passages of Scripture, because their meaning seems obvious to us.
But it was not always thus. There are many prophetic passages in the Old Testament, particularly relating to our Savior and our salvation, which were a mystery to the Saints in their time.
We ought to contemplate the force with which these passages must have exploded in the minds of Believers when their meaning was first revealed by the Holy Ghost.
Psalm 16:10 is a clear reference to Our Lord Jesus' resurrection, as well as the promise of the resurrection of God's people who trust in Him for deliverance.
"Thou wilt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption."
How that passage must have puzzled the Saints! For it must refer to Messiah, and yet He was supposed to reign forever and put all His foes beneath His feet. Why then the promise forbidding His suffering corruption?
No doubt this verse was well known and cherished by Old Testament Believers for their own hope of redemption. How little they realized that intertwined with their hope for resurrection was the Savior's death and resurrection!
The poor disciples never connected this promise with the Lord Jesus, never realizing that, when He hung upon the cross, all hope was not lost! They never laid hold of this promise for His resurrection!
The proof of this is that they proceeded to embalm and annoint his body - the vain rituals that man uses to try to stave off, if but for a moment, the corruption of death.
How their hearts must have rejoiced when Jesus rose again, and this verse came alive to them! It was used to powerful effect in Apostles' Gospel preaching to the Jews.
