In this dramatic passage, one in which Paul quite possibly quotes an early hymn of the church (known as the Carmen Christi), we are treated to an unveiling of divine truths that no one could know without the specific revelation of God, and it concerns the nature of the Son and His relationship with the Father before the incarnation, indeed before even creation.
Although the grammar of the passage by itself might lead us to think that Jesus was not God by nature, the context clearly shows that Jesus must have been God. Paul is using this passage as his first sermon illustration of his main point in this letter to the Philippians: lay aside your legitimate rights in service to others. Later on, Paul will give us, in Timothy and Epaphroditus, two more illustrations of the same concept.
