Aim: To be faithful leaders of our own generations.
Doctrine: The giving of the judges was a mercy, pointing us to God's ultimate deliverer (Jesus). The Lord always uses a person to effect His highest ends. A leader's true value is measure by how closely he or she approximates Christ.
Exegesis: Imitable qualities of the first judge: he stands out in a corrupt culture (vv. 7-8); he responds to God's call on his live (vv. 9-10); he shapes the generation of the day (v. 11).
Further application: What we should glean from the first judge (and his circumstances): that God is always active—even in the darkest times, and that man remains sinful—even in the brightest times.
Key verse: v. 9 ''When the children of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.''
