One of our girls ran up to me on the beach with a shell. “Dad, I found a pearl!” she shouted. She thought every two-sided shell contained a pearl. “I thought I was rich,” she sighed, after I reluctantly disappointed her.
But, suppose she had found a pearl. She would have been extremely excited at first. In time, she would have moved on.
Sadly, this is too often a metaphor for marriage.
A virtuous wife is a precious jewel (Prov. 31:10). A wise man does everything he can to court the favor of a virtuous woman. He wins her hand in marriage by practicing the kind of love that makes her believe she will be provided for, protected, and nurtured by his leadership. Tragically, that jewel can become neglected.
God gives a simple instruction to the husband who would again treasure the precious jewel that is his wife: Love your wife and do not be bitter toward her. Husband: Your best hope for a good marriage is not to coerce your wife to submit to you, but to cultivate a marital atmosphere in which trust, admiration, mutual respect, and cooperation grow best.
