Jonathan Edwards wrote this brief letter to a young woman named Deborah Hatheway on June 3, 1741—about a month before he serendipitously preached “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” at Enfield. It seems Miss Hatheway, a new believer in the nearby town of Suffield, had consulted Edwards for guidance on starting points in the Christian life. During this time Edwards had been providing regular help to the parish church at Suffield, whose pastor had died in April of that year. It was Edwards’ great concern to fan into flame the faith of those young souls who were converted during the Great Awakening. Much of this letter’s content probably came from his special gatherings of young people from his own congregation in which he dispensed “some counsels proper for their age.” Edwards’ warm and gentle tone are evident throughout this instruction, as is fitting for its content.
