What does it mean to be a Pentecostal Christian? As we ponder that question, we should try to avoid being biased by the contemporary use of that phrase. Instead, we should be shaped by what we have read in Acts 2. What we see there, is that a Pentecostal Christian is a person in whom and through whom the Spirit of God works in a powerful way. That’s our desire, isn’t it; to have God’s Spirit move powerfully among us. But we might wonder whether this a reasonable hope? Because, clearly, some events in Acts 2 are unique. We ought not expect to wear tongues of fire, or even to speak in tongues. At the same time, we should expect the Spirit to be active in our midst. The events in Acts 2 were unique because they were introducing the arrival of a new epoch of the Holy Spirit’s activity. The Spirit didn’t stop working powerfully after Pentecost! In this sermon, we want to see how God moved in Acts 2 so that, by faith, we can be better positioned to have him move through us today.
Keywords for PM sermon (for sermonaudio.com): Heidelberg Catechism Sin Guilt Law Christ Law Lord's Day Two Description: The Heidelberg Catechism claims that the first thing I need to know, in order to live and die happily, is how great my sin and misery are. That’s a paradox, an apparently self-contradictory statement. It seems like knowing our sin and misery would be the first step toward greater misery! In this sermon we attempt to understand that paradox and how knowing our true standing before God is the first step toward true and eternal comfort.
