The 70 years of captivity that Judah spent in Babylon is known as the Babylonian Captivity.
It is estimated that there may have been about 50.000 people including Daniel that were taken as captives back to Babylon.
Not all the Jews in Judah were taken to Babylon some actually fled to Egypt. (Jer 44.24ff)
God used the Babylonian Captivity in a number of ways for the benefit of the Israelites.
a. The Jews were cured of their idolatry. They gave up their idolatry completely. The Jews became more faithful to God in Babylon than when they were in Jerusalem.
b. Because of their captivity in Babylon the local synagogue was established.
c. Because of their captivity in Babylon the Jews became missionaries to other people groups.
d. During their captivity God placed a longing for the coming Messiah in their hearts.
e. During the captivity God placed a longing for their land back home.
Daniel would not compromise his faith even though he was a servant in a foreign land.
Daniel had Spiritual Discernment. Daniel knew that the Kings food and drink would corrupt him. Daniel knew that his relationship with God would be defiled if he consumed the food of the kings table. I believe the Church today in many places has lost its spiritual discernment. Today we live in the constant danger of taking on the World’s values and philosophies.
The Church has got to be careful of the corruption of this World.
