Paul started his epistle with an emphasis upon the cross – “we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1:23-24)
But if Jesus had stayed dead, then the cross would only have been a symbol of tragedy. As Cleopas said on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24:21 – “We had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.”
If Jesus had stayed dead, then hope would have died with him.
The whole of 1 Corinthians 7 is rooted in Paul’s doctrine of the resurrection. Paul’s approach to ethics is a resurrection ethic.
We saw the beginning of this last week in chapter 6, verses 13-14:
“The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.” (6:13-14)
Today we’re looking at how Paul applies the resurrection of the body to marriage and singleness.
