The son or heir while under guardians is like a slave, subject to the guardian. This is how the law is for us. With the coming of Christ, we are no longer under the law. Paul is contrasting the world with the word. We were once enslaved to the elementary things. Now we are no longer slaves, there is no turning back. Some seek material things to give value, but it is empty. Knowing God gives value-we are known by God. The allegory of the slave and of the free women-Hagar and Sara. The Children of the law persecuted the children of the free.
